Had some time today at work for my own project so I worked a little on the 'old truck' prop. Here's a render and a screen shot of the rear suspension. I kind of went a little overboard on the details because you probably wont see them on the final render, but its all practice I guess.

New Year, New Projects

So I'm trying to bust out at least one project bi-monthly this year. So I'm starting with a old time gas station. Right now I'm just blocking out the location of props and stuff so nothing really to see besides some rough models of props and lighting. I'm using maya and vray for maya, which is actually faster on maya then on max(or maybe its just me). Going for a toon vibe with a couple of characters and some cool looking cars. Stay tuned for updates.

So I decided why not keep on practicing my character modeling skills and try another one of my original design characters. So here is a rough block out of the model, I'm going to add details and textures later, I just need to build up the form and adjust the balance of the whole model. I think it looks good, so I might start the details in the next couple of days.

So the thing I hated modeling the most was characters, not because I couldnt but because the edge flow has to be perfect and I hate that LOL,. But I've been practicing with my own characters and I think I like it. Check out my latest creation:

I've been getting back to my cartooning background. I've been drawing a lot of little characters on post-its at work and I decided to throw one in illustrator and outline it. Its some sort of Aztec looking dude, I'll put some color on him tomorrow, so for now you only get some outline work.

My most recent work for LLS, a simple hotel room for hotel in Irvine (i think) . I wish I could show you my work from Sprite Animation but I cant because its a big hush hush. Lets just say it has something to do with 3d televisions and new programming.

I did a lot of photoshop post work on these but the client received a cleaner version because well... clients hate stylized renders. But I like doing post work on my work because it looks cool!

More Maya practice:
I was driving along the other day in my old neighborhood and I saw a ice cream push cart with a old bmx attached to it and I thought it would be a good simple project to model. I'll put some textures on it and maybe a character but this was just for modeling Maya practice. I'm planning on modeling something more complicated next so hopefully i get started on it later today.

Here's a little update. Still got a couple things to model and a shit load to texture but I'l liking the way things are coming out. I still have to fix the lighting a little more to show a little more of that bookcase. I will be adding some books, papers, a couple of various items on the ground to make it look a little messier. I still have to add some more picture frames and redo the rug. Anyway, thats all for now.

I put in a book shelf with tons of books and a record player to match. I'm going to put in a fire place and some other props. I was messing with the lighting and rendering and here's what I got.

I've been recently bombarded with project after project at work so I haven't been able to work on shit basically until last night. Here's what i've done so far:
I changed up the lighting a bit but I'm still not 100% with it and I finished one more building, I need to add some lion heads as decorative ornaments above the doors( red spheres about the doors) and maybe some wires around the windows for detail. I should be able to jump back on this project full time this weekend, so I'll some updates then.

So I've been working my ass off on my new 3d modeling/generalist reel so I haven't been updating this thing or seen any of my family members lol. Anyway, I did put together a ArchViz reel from my time at Liquid Light Studios where I do still currently work full time.

So I managed to get a little work done before the holiday's. Here's a updated version of my submarine scene. I redid the bottom ocean floor because I wasnt feeling the other version. I think i might add more fish and some bubbles. But I still have to texture the damn submarine.... i hate texturing.... i think more then rendering.... oh well. More updates soon.

I'm still bummed the that dodgers lost last night but on the bright side my freelance project is going pretty good and on time. I'm finishing up the 2nd scene and I have a few more to go, I'm rendering this particular scene which has 3 parts to it. Basically its a guy walking out of his house and into his car and driving away. Its basic mocap animation and camera tricks to cut down on the animation process. I will post more later tonight. I have to render this thing at 1920x1080 and I need all the processing power I can get!

So I'm doing a freelance job for my best friend Carlos. He's out in AZ so hopefully all goes well communication wise. Its a few little animations for a power point project for his work, it shouldn't take that long but I want to do a good job on it because I dont want him to look bad so I will be working on that full time for the next couple of weeks. I'll try to post some work in progress stills and animations if I can while I progress.

I also got Dodger tickets for Friday's afternoon game! That means I will be missing work to watch the game. I'm talking my cousin Ernie along because I promised him I would try to score some tickets.. and I did, sooooo we are going. Should be a great game, hopefully by the time its Friday we are up by 1 game and ready to go 2-0 by Late Friday afternoon.

Anyway, I'm also getting my latest project 'Before the storm' published in a future issue of 3d Artist magazine. If you haven't seen that magazine yet you need to go out and buy a issue, they are a little pricey but well worth it if your a 3d nerd like me. I've been the magazine before(issue#2) in the work in progress section. Check it out if you have time and some extra bucks to spend on the magazine. I will keep everyone informed when the issue comes.

So i modeled a few more things for the 'cockpit' area, messed with the lighting and finally might start texturing today.

Dodgers win game 1 and I have updates!

So the Dodgers beat the Cardinals 5-2, and that makes me a happy person! A lot of people were talking shit and saying the Dodgers would get swept.... that's not going to happen now! Lakers won as well, but seeing how it was a exhibition game nobody gave a fuck except me and the people at the Honda center where the game took place, I guess the 'real' fans show up at finals time in June not early October..... can you smell the sarcasm in the air....
Anyway, I threw in the character I did this afternoon and re did the lighting on the whole scene. I still don't know what to do with the rest of the scene but I guess I can fix that after I finish texturing the sub.

I think I over did the glow but I like it and I will tone it down for the final render.

I decided to work on my character for the sub project. He's really nothing special, just something to fill the hull of the sub, i didn't model arms or the pants because I didn't need it. More progress later tonight. I don't know if I should put the eye patch or not... I'll think about it.

Managed to get a little bit done tonight. Trying to figure out a paint scheme for the submarine and whether or not to put another prop buried in the sand.... I did in fact try to come up with a way to show this piece. Hench the video... I'll work more on this tomorrow, i need to come up with a character because the character in the sub is from another scene of mine and he will be replaced.

So I had this thing modeled a while back, another concept from Jake Parker, I love his 2d style so I try to re-enact it in 3d. I still have to texture the thing but you get the idea, i did some super heavy post work on it because I like the way it looks and its my blog so fuck it. I probably wont put so much post work on it for the final, but I wanted to have some fun with it. I think I might add another prop emerging from the sand, maybe a stone head or something of that nature. Worked a little on my toon street scene but still to little to show, but I will probably post more work later tonight. I'm off to watch Seinfeld and then catch some sleep..... I need to bike in the morning....

So I finally decided on what my next big scene will be. I will be modeling a toon style little city complete with cars and junk. I kept trying to find something interesting to work on but I kept going back to other artist's concepts and thinking to myself that hey I can make up my own concepts and designs so that's what motivated me. I'm going for pixar/dreamworks/old school disney on this one so be on the look out for some crazy shapes and really stylized architecture and cars.

Here is rough layout of the hardscape.
and some landscape tests. Just testing out non realistic trees at the moment, got these awesome leaf textures from total textures.
